About the album

The recent discovery of Telemann's Fantasias for viola da gamba solo has inspired many musicians to study and perform these masterpieces. Rainer Zipperling and his friends Saskia Coolen (recorder) and the newly appointed musical director of the Netherlands Bach Society Shunske Sato (violin) decided to release a 3 CD album containing all the solo Fantasias Telemann wrote for their instruments. Their solo performances are crowned with one Trio Sonata featuring all three musicians. This album available in a hand numbered, 1000 copy limited edition.

Saskia Coolen (recorder)

In 2012, recorder player Saskia Coolen discovered by chance, in the Historical Museum in Den Briel, the head joint of an alto recorder, made by the instrument maker Engelbert Terton. She brought in the recorder builder and expert Jan Bouterse who thoroughly cleaned and restored the joint. He suggested that there might well be other playble recorders to be found in private collections. In the years since then, Saskia’s research has turned up six forgotten eighteenth-century recorders: five altos and a sopranino. On this album she plays these rediscovered recorders, together with gambist Rainer Zipperling and harpsichordist Patrick  Ayrton, in eighteenth-century music by De Fesch, Nozeman, Van Wassenaer and other contemporaries. In 2004 Saskia also played on historic recorders, from the  collection...

Georg Philipp Telemann

Georg Philipp Telemann (14 March 1681 – 25 June 1767) was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist. Almost completely self-taught in music, he became a composer against his family's wishes. After studying in Magdeburg, Zellerfeld, and Hildesheim, Telemann entered the University of Leipzig to study law, but eventually settled on a career in music. He held important positions in Leipzig, Sorau, Eisenach, and Frankfurt before settling in Hamburg in 1721, where he became musical director of the city's five main churches. While Telemann's career prospered, his personal life was always troubled: his first wife died only a few months after their marriage, and his second wife had extramarital affairs and accumulated a large gambling debt before leaving Telemann. Telemann was one of the most prolific composers in history (at least in terms of surviving oeuvre) and was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the leading German composers of the time—he was compared favorably both to his friend Johann Sebastian Bach, who made Telemann the godfather and namesake of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, and to George Frideric Handel, whom Telemann also knew personally. Telemann's music incorporates several national styles (French, Italian) and is even at times influenced by Polish popular music. He remained at the forefront of all new musical tendencies and his music is an important link between the late Baroque and early Classical styles.

The works are put together on an album for the first time. It is versatile and imaginative music. Patches of folk melodies, but also virtuoso thunderstorms.
Luister, 19-1-2018

Telemann’s three sets of twelve fantasies for recorder, violin respectively viola da gamba are presented in successful performances. The musicians convince with an imaginative and sensitively expressive playing.

Pizzicato, 13-1-2018

The music is without exception brilliant - melodic and harmonious at first sight simpler than in any case Bach's and more focused on direct communication with the listener - and is ditto inspired by the gentlemen and lady, with great sense of style and to perfection executed.
Het Parool, 02-12-2017

With Telemann you will not be bored for four hours.
De Volkskrant, 27-11-2017

Spirituality and virtuosity produce a particularly infectious combination in which every form of epetting is lacking and everything is put at the service of what really matters: the music itself.
